Background

Bente Kalsnes is professor at the Department of Communication, Kristiania University College, where she has worked since 2019. Her research interests include political communication, political use of social media, digital journalism, platform power, fake news, disinformation and AI. She is the author of the book "Fake news: Lies, disinformation and propaganda in the digital public" (Cappelen Damm Akademisk, 2019). She has published in academic journals such as New Media & Society, Digital Journalism, European Journal of Communication, Journalism Practice, Media, Culture & Society, and in 2020-2023 was co-editor of Norsk medietidsskrift with Karoline Ihlebæk. Kalsnes is a participant in the research project Source criticism and mediated disinformation (SCAM, 2020-2024) funded by the Research Council of Norway. Kalsnes is a member of the Expert Group on artificial intelligence and elections, appointed by the Norwegian government (2024-2025). Kalsnes was a member of the Freedom of Expression Commission, appointed by the Norwegian government (2020-2022) and the Nordic Think Tank for Democracy and Technology, appointed by the Danish Ministry of Culture (2022-2023). Kalsnes previously worked as an Associate Professor at the Department of Journalism and Media Studies (OsloMet) and has a PhD from the Department of Media and Communication (UiO). She has previously worked as a journalist and freelancer in Dagens Næringsliv, Dag og Tid, Morgenbladet, and Dagbladet, and has been a communications advisor at Origo, and was one of the initiators behind Girl Geek Dinners in Oslo.
