The design lab

Here you can work on school assignments and immerse yourself in your own projects, alone or together with others. In the Designlab, you can develop yourself, get to know students across the lines and gain lots of practical experience - which is worth its weight in gold when you go out into working life.

The purpose of the Design Lab is to facilitate innovative thoughts and ideas. Here you can take your work further from the drawing board and put it into practice. Only your own imagination sets limits to what you can create in the Designlab!

The design lab in Oslo is located at Rosenkrantz gate 16, while the Designlab in Bergen is located at C. Sundts gate 33.

If you need assistance, workshop foreman Tobias (Oslo) and Helge (Bergen) are ready to lend a helping hand. We also offer courses with training in the various tools.

Courses and registration

Do you want training in the equipment at the design lab? Courses are set up continuously. In the design lab's calendar, you will find an overview of upcoming courses and events that you can attend. You can also sign up in the calendar.

To be able to use the protolab, you must complete a safety course with a review of HSE rules for the room, as well as training in the use of the various machines and tools. After completing the course, you will gain access to the protolab via your key card.

Below is a list of equipment available to Kristiania's students in Oslo and Bergen.

Utstyr i Designlabbene

The Cricut Maker is a lightweight 2D cutting machine that is extremely easy to use. It has a head that you can attach a knife or pen to, which in turn is used to either cut or mark the material you pass through it. Paper, cardboard, textiles and light wooden boards are popular materials to use with this machine. It is also ideal for stencils. Everything is done easily via the web app and requires no training.
With a laser cutter, you can both cut and engrave everything from wood and denim to metal and acrylic. We've even experimented with food, and engraving a banana worked just fine. To use the machine, you must attend a laser cutting course. Course offers are set up continuously.
We have high quality photo printers and plotters. The plotter, Canon Image Prograf 6000, can be used to print extra large formats. The Epson P800 is a photo printer that prints high-quality images.
The Ultimaker 3 is an easy-to-use 3D printer. With 3D printers like this, the only limit is your imagination. We have filaments in several varieties and colors.
Caslon FoilTech FT12 picks up the black color on paper and applies foil while the paper is rolled through the machine. Choose between foil in all the colors of the rainbow, you can produce everything from business cards and postcards to posters.
Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and PlayStation are some of what we have available to our students, in addition to two gaming PCs with solid GPUs that can be used to run VR experiences and games. For example, 3D/CAD models that are used, among other things, in the interior study. In this way, you as a student can experience what you have created virtually.
The IDEAL 4705 can cut a large stack of paper at a time. It can, among other things, be used to trim large runs of printed material, or for something that requires a little extra horsepower when cutting paper.
Are you going to edit video, render 3D models or do something that requires powerful hardware? Then we have powerful iMac Pro available.
We have a number of iPad Pros available for loan at the reception at Spikersuppa. All iPad Pros are equipped with Apple Pencil, making them ideal for illustration and graphic design students. On the iPads, you have apps like Procreate and Swift Playgrounds available.
We have our own screen printing workshop in U2. Here you will find everything you need to print your illustrations on, for example, posters and t-shirts. At this workshop we also have our own machine for vinyl printing, as well as a sewing machine.
The protolab can be found in U2 next to the screen printing room. The workshop is reminiscent of a plumbing hall with table drills, band saws, plunge saws, glue guns, soldering irons, polishing machines, various hand tools and much more!
