Securing Funds for Open Access Publishing at Kristiania University College

External Research Funding

Some research financiers cover fees for OA publications. It should be ascertained when applying for external funding if OA fees can be covered by the funder. When possible, external funds should cover Article Processing Charges (APC).

"Read & Publish" Agreements

On behalf of the sector, Sikt has negotiated transitional agreements with the leading scientific publishers. These agreements ensure that participating institutions have both reading access and open publishing rights for a large percentage of the publishers' portfolios.

Some of the agreements that Høyskolen Kristiania has signed cover the article fee (APC) for hybrid journals and also give discounts on publishing in fully open journals (Gold OA journals). In cases where a discount is given for fully open journals, the author can apply to Kristiania College’s Publication Fund for the remaining amount; see below for more information about the fund.

Diamond Open Access

Diamond open access (also referred to as "platinum" open access) is a publishing model where both reading access and open publishing are free for the author. Instead of imposing author or reader fees, diamond journals and platforms are financed through alternative models such as public grants and membership fees.

Diamond journals are "community-driven"; initiatives owned and run by the research community itself, with a focus on principles such as the researchers' ownership and control over process, content, sustainable costs and publishing diversification (eg "bibliodiversity"). Many of these journals also explore new forms of peer review (eg "open peer-review" and "post-publication peer review").

The Diamond/Platinum model and principles have the potential to influence the publishing landscape in the years to come. See also Sikt publication (Oct 2023); Towards responsible publishing: a proposal fra cOAlition S.

At present, diamond open access can’t replace the more prevalent forms of open publishing (eg open journals with article fees) or traditional journals (journals with subscription costs). However, in some research areas they may be an alternative to consider.

Publication Fund

Kristiania University College has set up a publication fund to cover publication fees for articles (Article Processing Charges - APC) and for monographs/anthology chapters (Book Processing Charges – BPC).

Researchers can apply by filling out the Publication Fund Application Form. The application is submitted by filling in the following online form. The fund is administered by the library, applications are processed on an ongoing basis.

Criteria for the Publishing Fund

Support can only cover article processing charges (APC) for peer-reviewed articles in fully open journals. Support is not given for the purchase of OA for articles in hybrid journals.

The applicant must be the corresponding author and an employee at Høyskolen Kristiania.

Høyskolen Kristiania must be credited in the final publication.

The journal must be approved at level 1 or level 2 in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers.

The journal must be registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) .

The publication must be peer-reviewed and qualify for reporting to the Norwegian Scientific Index (NVI).

The publication must be registered in CRIStin and uploaded for deposit in Kristiania’s open institutional archive, currently KOA.

For articles, the entire APC will be covered.

No support is given for additional fees such as page fee, language washing, extra illustrations, and the like.

Publication support is not normally given to externally funded projects as these should have the article fee incorporated as part of the project application.

Master’s students applying for coverage of the APC must provide written approval from their supervisor.
To receive publication support for book chapters, the entire anthology must be made openly available. Support is not provided for the purchase of OA for individual chapters.

The applicant must be the corresponding author and an employee at Kristiania University College.

Kristiania University College must be credited in the final publication.

The publisher must be approved at level 1 or 2 in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers.

The publisher must be approved by the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB).

The anthology must be peer-reviewed and qualify for reporting to the Norwegian Scientific Index (NVI).

The publication must be registered in CRIStin and uploaded for deposit in Kristiania’s open institutional archive, currently KOA.

The funding limit is 35 000 NOK (excluding VAT) per chapter. Any excess amount must be covered through other funding sources. The maximum amount awarded per anthology cannot exceed 150 000 NOK (including VAT).

No support is given for additional fees such as page fee, language washing, extra illustrations, and the like.

Support is only provided for chapters written by employees of Kristiania University College. The funds awarded are calculated based on Kristiania University College's author share in the anthology.

The anthology must be registered by the publisher in DOAB after publication.

Publication support is not normally given to externally funded projects as these should have the publication cost incorporated as part of the project application.
To receive publication support, the entire monograph must be made openly available.

The applicant must be the corresponding author and an employee at Kristiania University College.

Kristiania University College must be credited in the final publication.

The publisher must be approved at level 1 or 2 in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers.
