Cross-cultural Family Violence

  • Project period: 2023 - 2024
  • Category: In-house Project

Description

According to WHO (2018) report gender-based violence is linked to masculine ideologies in connection with attitudes and behaviours. The experience of violence in the family as children is an established risk factor for the development of violent behaviour and depression in adolescence or adult aged (Walker-Descartes et al. 2021). Adolescents who had experienced violence in their family system were more likely to be exposed to violent peer influences and to accept violent norms (Xia et al. 2018). Cross-cultural family violence is a global phenomenon, affecting individuals and families from various countries and cultural backgrounds. Every culture is diverse and has its own unique characteristics, there are certain general patterns and factors that have been observed regarding cross-cultural family violence like as cultural variation, gender dynamics or immigrant and refugee communities. However, limited research exists specifically focusing on cross-cultural family violence. Available previous and present studies indicate that the prevalence of family violence may vary across cultures due to cultural norms, gender roles, socioeconomic factors, and migration experiences (Cousineau & Rondeau, 2004; Pokharel et al. 2021).
