Department of Performing Arts

The department has its roots in the Norwegian College of Dance, the acting education at NISS/Westerdals and the Norwegian College of Musical Theatre.

Our professional staff has a large proportion of performing and creative artists who are and have been active in the field of performing arts, and who are professionally up-to-date and are drivers of knowledge development in the field of the performing arts.

In academic research, we place the performing arts in a larger context with issues close to the field of practice. Through artistic development work, both in collaboration with theatres and companies nationally and with international institutions, artistic research is conducted at a high level. Extensive and active pedagogical development work drives ground-breaking and new pedagogical ideas for how to teach effectively in the field of the performing arts.

With a strong focus on an education programme that is relevant to working life and close to the field of practice, the Department of Performing Arts offers three bachelor's studies; Musical Theatre, Dance and Acting.

The Acting education programme specialises in film acting and contemporary theatre, Dance specialises in contemporary dance and jazz dance, and Musical Theatre consists of the combination of song, dance and acting.

The core of all three study programmes is to inspire our students to adopt an independent and curious attitude to their own artistic development, and at the same time see themselves in a larger societal context.  We therefore challenge our students to work systematically, methodically, critically and independently with their subject, e.g. through being included in the department's research and artistic development work, but also through interdisciplinary projects with students from other art study programmes, such as music subjects, film and TV, script and sound.

The students work through the programme together with the best national and international guest educators. With prestigious international partner schools, we ensure that our students find attractive opportunities for exchange, and that we receive visits from their students and educators.
