Westerdals Department of Film and Media

We prepare our students for a creative career in film, TV, and Computer Arts – supported by research and close collaboration with the industry.

Westerdals Department of Film and Media offers bachelor´s degrees in Film and TVScreenwritingSound Design, or Computer Arts (Game Design, 3D-graphics, Animation, and Visual Effects.)

Our study programs combine theory, practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration, giving students the tools to influence and develop the media landscape of the future.

With us, students work on real projects from day one. They receive guidance from industry experts who are themselves active in film, TV, sound, and digital media. With access to state-of-the-art studios, mixing theaters, and industry-standard equipment, our students are well-prepared for a professional career. At the same time, they build a unique network through interdisciplinary collaboration and practical experience – perfect for those who want to create something new and relevant for today's industry.

A highlight of the study program is the Media Art Innovation Lab (MAIL), where students from all our bachelor's programs work together across disciplines. Here, students develop and produce larger interdisciplinary and innovative productions in collaboration with external partners.

Westerdals Institute of Film and Media provides students with the knowledge, network, and tools they need to succeed in a rapidly changing audiovisual media industry. With over 150 graduating students each year, we make a significant footprint both in Norway and internationally. We are not just part of the development – we lead it.

Facilities

Kristiania offers unique facilities at both Fjerdingen and Urtegata, specifically designed for our creative programs. We provide access to mixing cinemas, editing rooms and labs, computer labs, and sound studios.

Research Arena

The institute is not just an educational hub but also a center for research and artistic development. We host several research groups and artistic development projects, including Collaborative Media Arts (CoMA), EcoSystem, and PRISMA, all of which contribute to developing new storytelling formats and exploring the role of media in society and culture. Projects like Writing the Writer exemplify how we combine artistic research with academic reflection to challenge and evolve the media landscape.

Research projects

  • "An exploration of truth vs.fiction in the biographical screenplay genre." The project focuses on the screenplay genre as a distinctive form of artistic practice and its subgenre, the historical/biographical drama. It explores how a biographical screenplay, through specific poetic tools such as incarnation and reenactment, can generate a unique kind of knowledge of its subject. The main artistic outcome will be a screenplay drama, based on Ibsen´s “chaotic years", 1856-1866.
