In this course, students get an overview of the different steps in the design process from idea to finished product, which materials and production processes are suitable for which products and which analog and digital tools can be used in the design process. The course provides an introduction to different work processes, and how product design interacts and collaborates with other professional environments and partners.

The course consists of four underlying themes:

Introduction to product design

The theme is an introduction to product design and design methodology, with insight into design thinking, idea development techniques, project work, principles in sustainability, and what tools we use to implement design processes.

Form, function and technology

The theme sheds light on concept development and the practical implementation of the design process, with sketching technique, construction and shaping. The connection between form, function and technique is emphasized. It will be important to make the student aware of the profession's influence at the societal and individual level, so that the student is able to reflect on the subject's value-creating factors.

Materials and applications

In this topic, the student examines different types of materials and how their properties can be suitable for different products. The student receives training in preparing requirements specifications and project plans. The student is introduced to the school's workshop and machine park, with a view to use and HSE regulations.

Digital tools

The theme provides knowledge about various visualization tools for product development. The student can visualize digitally and is aware of how we can clarify design using various visualization tools.
