Introduction

The course provides an introduction to scientific research with emphasis on the application of quantitative and qualitative methods with the aim of providing students with a basic picture of social science research processes and thereby obtaining a basis for further work on the method subject.

The course provides an introduction to the research process and how to formulate and test a hypothesis, specify a problem or prepare a scientifically rooted question. Furthermore, the course will give an introduction to the choice of qualitative and quantitative methods, methods for data collection, theory anchoring and analysis techniques. Students also get an introduction to academic reading and writing, source management and assessment of ethical issues related to research.

  • can outline processes for collecting quantitative data and presenting main sizes from data such as averages and variance
  • knows how to use digital tools such as SPSS to load data, inspect variables and present simple descriptive sizes
  • can point to and discuss challenges related to selection selection

Learning activities

The teaching will be given in the form of a lecture series with associated pre and post-work. It is assumed that the students meet prepared for the lectures and that one actively participates in the thesis work the topic proposes. Active student learning forms will be used. A number of the assignments will be given as group work where the students work on designing studies and discussing methodological challenges and research ethics. Active participation is a prerequisite for the learning outcomes described above.
