The aim of the course is to provide the candidate with a broad perspective of research methodology and practices, research ethics, the role of research in society, and a background in philosophy of science.

The course is divided into four main parts: i) Research Practice, ii) Research Ethics, iii) Research in Society, and iv) Philosophy of Science.

Research Practice cover generic activities involved in the research process, such as choosing a methodology and documenting research results in scientific papers. The reproducibility-crisis in science is addressed, as well as how systematic reviews and meta-analyses aim to overcome some of the shortcomings. Candidates are expected to give a presentation of their own research projects and discuss how the chosen methodology fits their purpose.

Research Ethics takes as its starting point relevant laws and regulations on research ethics. National guidelines for research ethics in various fields are exposed in detail, and a number of case studies are discussed. This part ends with a discussion of international guidelines for ethical research practice.

Research in Society covers the role of research in society and addresses both positive and negative influences. Various modes of collaboration with entities outside academia are discussed, leading up to a critical discussion on the social impact of research. This part concludes with a mini-workshop on research dissemination.

Philosophy of Science exposes the candidate to how various conceptions of science developed from the first half of the 20th century and onwards. Contrasts and similarities between different approaches will be a starting point for discussing various views of science. The part is concluded with a critical discussion of current issues in the philosophy of science.

On the basis of the course, the candidate will be able to evaluate the possibilities and application of different approaches to research and will be well positioned to carry out his/her research with scholarly integrity as part of a research community.
