Innledning
This course introduces theoretical and practical perspectives related to the collection, analysis and managing of digital communication data such as data emanating from various social media services. The skills learned in this course are of high relevance to information professionals who need to be able to assess and analyze communication data in order to make well-informed decisions for further practice. The course will also introduce the students to concepts and issues typically dealt with by ICT professionals, thereby helping the students to develop the interdisciplinary understanding that is necessary to function effectively in complex organizations.
In combination with more theoretical sections, the main part of the course is focused on the introduction of programming languages (like R or Python) for data collection and data management. Students will further use industry standard software (like Tableau or SPSS) for data analyses, which will then be presented in class. Overall, these practical exercises are combined with theoretical lectures that will encourage the students to reflect critically on what kind of data we have access to, the ways in which we can archive and analyze data, and the ethical issues that we face when doing so.
